Girls studying by oil lamp — no electricity

Nigeria's energy gap starts in the classroom.

Over 85 million Nigerians live without reliable electricity. Rural schools study by candlelight. Health posts can't refrigerate vaccines. Nigeria also has some of the best solar conditions in the world — up to 7.5 peak sun hours a day. The technology exists. What's missing is knowledge, access, and a generation willing to lead the shift.

Girls Belong in The Energy Transition.

Y-JET deliberately positions girls as active participants in clean-energy learning and leadership — not as afterthoughts. Through dedicated sessions, mentorship and visible female role models, we are building a generation of young women who see themselves as engineers, advocates and decision-makers in Nigeria's energy future.

"The energy transition cannot be just if half of the next generation is missing from the room."

Samuel Chidubem

Samuel Chidubem

Founder

Samuel Chidubem is the Founder of Youth for Just Energy Transition (Y-JET), a youth-led initiative advancing clean-energy education, climate awareness, and youth participation in Nigeria's energy transition.

With a background in Political Science and a strong interest in public policy and youth development, Samuel founded Y-JET to take conversations about climate change and renewable energy beyond policy spaces and into schools and underserved communities.

He started Y-JET because he believes young Nigerians should not wait for the energy transition to happen to them. They should understand it, participate in it and eventually help shape it.

His vision is simple: young people should not only inherit the energy transition — they should have a voice in accelerating it.

Samuel Ugwu

Samuel Ugwu

Co-Founder & Programme Coordinator

Samuel Ugwu is a Co-Founder of Youth for Just Energy Transition (Y-JET) and serves as its Programme Coordinator.

Passionate about business innovation, climate intelligence, and youth-led solutions, Samuel believes Africa's energy transition must be understood and shaped by people at the grassroots.

Through Y-JET, he helps translate complex conversations around clean energy, climate resilience, energy justice, and sustainable development into practical programmes young people can understand and participate in.

As Programme Coordinator, Samuel supports the design and implementation of Y-JET's school and community programmes, connecting young people with knowledge, opportunities, and conversations around Nigeria's evolving energy landscape.

The publication highlights our vision to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to participate in a just and inclusive energy transition.

"A beacon of hope for Nigeria from Alicante: a project that aims to bring solar panels to villages. They still use firewood and candles."
